MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Bucks centre Larry Sanders will be out until at least the All-Star break this weekend with a fractured bone near his eye. Coach Larry Drew announced before the teams game Monday night against the Boston Celtics that he was told earlier in the day that Sanders was injured when he was elbowed in the right eye by Houstons James Harden as the two went for a rebound early in Saturday nights game. Drew believes the fracture is in the orbital bone, and adds that Sanders is experiencing double vision in the eye. Sanders missed nearly two months early this season after tearing a thumb ligament in a fight at a Milwaukee night club. Zaza Pachulia was scheduled to start in Sanders absence against Boston. Asics Running Shoes Clearance .J. -- Mike Goodsons season is over just as it was getting started. No other team in the league has experienced more uncertainty at quarterback the past few years than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Buck Pierces time was marred by several injuries while none from the cast of backups, from Alex Brink and Joey Elliott to Max Hall, Justin Goltz, and Jason Boltus, managed to distinguish themselves during their opportunities for the team. Even the Ottawa Redblacks, not yet having played a game, appear better set behind centre. Compared to some of Winnipegs rotation of quarterbacks the past couple seasons, the expansion team has an embarrassment of riches at the position with veterans Henry Burris and Kevin Glenn, and two-year pro Thomas DeMarco. With the trade and subsequent contract extension for former Saskatchewan Roughriders QB Drew Willy, Bombers GM Kyle Walters is hoping all his QB problems are in the past. After losing out to Zach Collaros and Hennry Burris just days before, Walters finally landed a QB to be penciled in atop his depth chart heading into the 2014 season; but will Willy stay there, and more importantly, will he find success where so many before him have faltered? The 27-year-old is light on experience, having started just two games in his career behind Darian Durant in Saskatchewan, but has shown potential in his limited action.dddddddddddd Willy threw just 52 passes last season, going for 473 yards and four touchdowns to just one interception. He saw a little more action last year, his first in the league, and for his career is 101-147 for 1,182 yards and nine touchdowns to five interceptions. His resume is light, but theres enough to get excited about with the Buffalo product. The Rouge asks: Is Drew Willy the answer at quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers? As always, its Your! Call. West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Melvin Gordon rushed for 205 yards and a touchdown and No. 25 Wisconsin beat Purdue 34-16 on Saturday. Joel Stave passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the win, most of it in the first half as the Badgers (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten) played their first game as a ranked team in over a month. They overcame a shaky start to the second half, which included Gordons fumble and failed fourth-down run and a near-onside kick recovery by the Boilermakers after Austin Applebys 79-yard touchdown pass to Akeem Hunt got them within 24-16. Appleby passed for 204 yards for Purdue (3-7, 1-5), which has lost three in a row. Paul Griggs kicked three field goals in the loss, including two over 50 yards. The Badgers have beaten Purdue nine straight times, including six in a row in West Lafayette. After dropping out of the ranking following a loss to Northwestern on Oct. 4, Wisconsin held Maryland to a season-low seven points and handed Rutgers its first shutout in 12 years, moving to No. 2 in the nation in scoring defense. The offense nearly coughed up the lead in this one when a fumble and failed fourth-down conversion led to 10 points for Purdue early in the third quarter, trimming the Badgers 24-6 halftime lead. Gordon lost the ball on the first play from scrimmage, leading to Griggs 52- yard field goal. Gordon was then stopped on a 4th-and-1 try at the Purdue 16 and Appleby connected with Hunt on a 79-yard touchdown three plays later to get the Boilermakers within 24-16. It nearly got worse for Wisconsin when a surprise onside kick was recovered near the sideline by Purdues Raheem Mostert. But the play was reversed after a replay review. Boilermakers safety Landon Feichter later intercepted Stave at the Purdue 15, but they punted and Tanner McEvoy gave Wisconsin a 31-16 lead with a 13-yard touchdown run to cap a four-play drive. Rafael Gaglianones 31-yard field goal capped a 12-play drive to open the fourth quarter and made it 34-16 Wisconsin. Earlier, Griggs kicked a 40-yard field goal on Purdues first drive, but Gordons 14-yard touchdown run later in the first put the Badgers on top for good. After Griggs nailed a 53-yarder on the first play of the second quarter, Gaglianone made a 24-yarder for Wisconsin. Staves 27-yard touchdown pass to Gordon later in the second made it 17-6 and his 9-yard throw to Alex Erickson gave the Badgers a 24-6 lead at halftime. Nike Free Flyknit Chukka Nederland . PETERSBURG, Fla.MINNEAPOLIS - After joining Cleveland for the final month, Jason Kubel found himself in a familiar place in Minnesota when the Indians finished the regular season. During that series with the Twins, Kubel stopped in the home clubhouse to see some of his old teammates and coaches. Manager Ron Gardenhire got to the point. "I said, Why arent you in this clubhouse?" Gardenhire recalled. "He said, Well, lets talk over the winter. And we talked." Less than three months later, Kubel signed with the Twins. Hell be at spring training next month on a minor league contract, but if he is added to the 40-man roster he would receive a $2 million base salary. There are bonuses built in, too: $150,000 each for 300 and 350 plate appearances and $200,000 for 400 plate appearances; and $150,000 each for 30 and 60 days on the active major league roster, excluding time on the disabled list, and $200,000 for 90 days on the active major league roster. Thats an extra $1 million waiting for him if hes healthy and productive enough to re-establish himself as an everyday player. "The guy can put some swings on the ball and put it in the seats. He can carry a ballclub," Gardenhire said. "Im not saying hes here to do that, but I think hes going to be very valuable for us if he comes and proves that in spring training that hes still good and healthy." Kubel isnt the only former Twins standout whos back for a second time. Shortstop Jason Bartlett was signed to a minor league deal and will be in camp vying for a spot. General manager Terry Ryan also confirmed over the weekend the team has maintained interest in two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, who is recovering from a second surgery on the left shoulder that kept him out of the 2011 and 2013 seasons. Santana probably wont be ready to pitch until the summer, and hed surely have other teams to pick from. But the theme the Twins are following is clear: leadership ability and winning experience, two important traits theyve largely lacked the last three years while losing at least 96 games each time. Bartlett and Kubel are past their prime, a decline accelerated by injuries, but if theyre healthy they could help enhance the roster. Pedro Florimon is a slick fielder, buut even for a shortstop a .dddddddddddd78 career on-base percentage wont cut it for long. If the 27-year-old wins the job again, Bartlett could still be in line for a utility spot, competing with Eduardo Escobar. "I feel like a rookie again," Bartlett said over the weekend at the teams annual fan festival, held at Target Field for the first time. Bartlett was traded to Tampa Bay before the 2008 season. He went to the World Series that fall and had a career year in 2009. But his production sharply decreased in 2010, and he was traded to San Diego. Limited by a sprained right knee in 2012, Bartlett was released that summer batting just .133. He didnt play at all in 2013, and he thought his career could be over. He had surgery to fix the knee, though, and the 34-year-old said hes been working out pain-free since. Before choosing the Twins, however, he had to talk to the boss. "He was concerned about if he had a chance to make the club, and I said, Absolutely. You come into my spring training and you prove youre healthy, I know youre a winner. I know you know how to play," Gardenhire said. Kubel signed shortly after Bartlett. "Jason Tyner called me and said, Whats going on? Is this an old-timers game? Do I need to pack my bag or what?" Bartlett said. "That was funny. We have good memories here." Including, of course, the 2006 season when the Twins went 96-66, one game behind the New York Mets and Yankees for the best record in baseball. "We both have been on this team when we were doing well," said Kubel, who also spent time at TwinsFest. "They kind of wanted to bring that attitude back. Theyve got the right guys to do that with." Kubel signed with Arizona for two years and $15 million prior to the 2012 season, but last year he was bothered by knee and quadriceps trouble on his left leg and stumbled to career lows in every significant statistical category. He was designated for assignment and then traded to Cleveland. Just two years ago, though, he hit 30 homers and drove in 90 runs for the Diamondbacks. There are openings in the outfield for him to fill. "It just didnt work out last year," he said. "Healthy now. No issues. ... Im just really excited to get started." The Toronto Blue Jays have signed outfielder Ryan Kalish to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. In 57 games with the Chicago Cubs last season, Kalish batted .248 while splitting time between all three outfield positions. He spent parts of the 2010 and 2012 seasons with the Boston Red Sox. The team originally drafted him in the ninth round of the 2006 Draft. The 26-year-old missed the 2011 and 2013 seasons due to various surgeries. Adidas Stan Smith White Black . The Bruins got their power play going and got under the Canadiens skin as they won 4-2 to push Montreal to the edge of a playoff precipice. Boston was crisp from the get-go and scored power-play goals 32 seconds apart early in the second period to build an insurmountable 3-0 lead. "I dont think you can look at tonight and say all of a sudden we found our game." said Julien. "I think we were better tonight but theres another game to win and, Im being honest here, its not going to be easy." Game 6 of the second-round playoff series is Monday in Montreal with the Canadiens needing a win to remain alive -- undoubtedly regretting the Game 4 overtime loss at the Bell Centre that rejuvenated the Bruins. Montreal, which outshot Boston 31-30, has trailed Boston three games to two five times before and come back to win three of those series. After a five-year post-season drought with the man advantage against the Habs, Boston broke the power-play hoodoo through back-to-back strikes by Reilly Smith and Jarome Iginla. Tomas Plekanec was in the penalty box for both goals. "I thought we were intent when we started the game but their power play gave them a lot of momentum and confidence," said Montreal coach Michel Therrien. Boston was 0-for-10 in the series on the power play and amazingly had not scored in 39 tries with the man advantage against Montreal in the post-season since Game 2 of their 2009 Conference quarter-final. "Our power play was due," Julien said by way of understatement. After the first period, the talk was of the need for more intensity, winning more battles and making stronger plays on the power play. It worked and Boston had the rare luxury of playing with a lead. The Bruins led for 46 minutes 40 seconds Saturday, some four times the 11:39 they were ahead during the first four games of the series. The Canadiens have held the lead for 106:11 of the series. Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson also scored for the Bruins, who got a strong physical game from Milan Lucic. The hulking winger cruised the ice like a shark, looking for someone to take a piece out of. A late P.K. Subban goal made the score closer than the game actually was. Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal. Goalie Carey Price said the Habs are up for the elimination challenge. "You back any animal into a corner, its going to be desperate," he said calmly. "I think were going to be a desperate hockey club coming into next game and I think were excited for the challenge." Game 7, if needed, would be next Wednesday in Boston. The Canadiens will need to take a deep breath before the puck drops at the Bell Centre with their season on the line. "Frustration or not, weve got to make sure we play with some more composure," said a tight-lipped Therrien. Subban complained after the game of being sprayed with water twice from the Boston bench late in the game. After raising the issue in his post-game scrum, he tried to downplayed the antics but it clearly bothered him. "It hit me in the visor. I couldnt even see the last minute and a half out there," he said. "So I was pretty upset about that ... Im sure if that was me that did it, it would be a different story. Id probably be on the news for the next three days." Therrien, who looked like he had sucked a lemon prior to taking the podium, had little to say about hockeys version off Watergate.dddddddddddd "Yeah, we saw that," he said when asked about the water spraying. "I dont want to comment on that," he added when pressed on the matter. Julien said he didnt see it and wouldnt condone it. After two games that features a total of five penalties, the referees remembered to bring their whistles with them Saturday and called 11 penalties. Montreal was 2-for-5 on the night with the man-advantage but was 0-for-3 in the first period. "I strongly believe that if we would have gotten a goal on one of those first power plays, it could have been the difference in the game," said Subban. Therrien, meanwhile, said his team had to be better five-on-five. The line of Soderberg, Eriksson and Matt Fraser finished with two goals and three assist and was plus-six. The Bruins third line has now scored three of Bostons last five goals with Fraser accounting for the overtime winner last Thursday in Montreal. Soderberg was awarded the Bruins jacket, a hand-me-down from Boston legend Johnny Bucyk, as the teams player of the game. The capacity crowd of 17,565 at TD Garden had plenty to cheer about. Boston looked focused and physical, outhitting Montreal 39-29. Plus the Bruins managed to plug up Montreals shooting lanes. "It was one of those games where were just on the wrong side of the puck all night," said Canadiens captain Brian Gionta. Smith hit the post before either team registered a shot. The Bruins went ahead at 13:20 of the first period after Eriksson beat the lumbering Douglas Murray to the puck behind the net and sent it straight back to Soderberg, who banged the puck in off Prices pad for his first career playoff goal. It came on Bostons sixth shot of the night. It was a good omen for the Bruins, given the team scoring first won the first four games of the series and the Bruins were 5-0 in the playoffs -- and 41-6-2 during the regular season -- with the first goal. Then came the power play breakthrough as the Bruins dominated the second period. After some good puck movement had the Canadiens running around, a Dougie Hamilton shot from the point deflected in off Smiths foot. Then, after a Bruins faceoff win, a nifty Torey Krug pass from the wall found Iginla all alone and he snapped a shot past Price. Boston was bossing the game and the Habs began to lose some of their composure. But Plekanec made up for some of that time in the penalty box when he snapped a shot from the faceoff dot that went through a Boston defencemans legs before rattling in off Gallagher at 14:39 on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1. The five-foot-nine Gallagher got thumped in the corner seconds before on the play, but picked himself up and got in front of the goal to be in position to tip the puck in. The goal ended Tuukka Rasks shutout streak of 122 minutes six seconds. The Bruins kept up the pressure in the third, coming at the Canadiens. Boston calmly blunted Montreal attacks and then moved the puck up ice with speed and purpose. Erikssons goal, with 5:48 remaining, came on a three-on-two complete with some slick passing. Price denied Fraser but was powerless to stop Eriksson, who skated around him until he had a clear shot at an empty net. With Matt Bartkowski off for holding and Price on the bench, Subban scored from the point to make it 4-2 with 2:29 remaining. Therrien brought back Brandon Prust, who had sat out the last two games. Making way was veteran Daniel Briere who had played under 10 minutes each of the last three contests. Canadas Brad Jacobs looks to make it a gold medal sweep in curling for Canada when he takes on two-time world champion David Murdoch of Great Britain in the mens final on Friday. Catch all the live streaming action at 8:30am et/5:30am pt. Canada finished the roundrobin in second place with a 7-2 mark, putting together six straight wins heading into the playoffs. In Wednesdays semifinal against China, the foursome from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario scored three in the seventh end to snap a 4-4 tie and then punched their ticket to the final with three more in the ninth frame for a 10-6 victory. "It was definitely our best game," said Canadian third Ryan Fry. "We have a knack of being able to elevate our game in the big games. I dont know what the recipe is for that but we brought it for that game." Great Britain wrapped up the roundrobin in fourth spot with a record of 5-4, good enough for a berth in a tiebreaker with Norways Thomas Ulsrud. Trailing by one in the 10th end, Murdoch came through with a deuce and a 6-5 win to advance to a semifinal matchup against top-ranked Niklas Edin of Sweden, who finished with an 8-1 record. Once again trailing by one heading to the last frame, Murdoch again scored a deuce for a 6-5 win and a guaranteed medal for the first time in his third trip to the Olympics. "It is by far the best day I have ever had," said Murdoch after the win. "In past Olympic Games, I have been so close. Throughout my whole career, its the Olympic Games that matter and I have always been an inch away." Canada faced Great Britain in the roundrobin on Saturday and came away with a 7-5 decision in a game that came down to a steal by Jacobs in the 10th end. Sweden faces China in the bronze medal game at 3:30am et/12:30am pt. On Thursday, Canadas Jennifer Jones won the gold medal on the womens side with a 6-3 win over Swedens Margaretha Sigfridsson. Poile announced Monday that Barry Trotz, the NHLs longest tenured head coach with one team, would not be back for a 16th season after the Predators missed the post-season for a second straight year. A few hours later, Poile said at a news conference a few hours later that wont get it done. "This is a wakeup call for everybody in our organization," Poile said. "Its a wakeup call for me. Get out of your comfort zone. Its going to be different here. Theres going to be a new coach in charge. ... Its going to be a difference voice and its going to be a different direction. And hopefully ... the foundation Barrys presented here for the next coach will take us to a higher level." Trotzs contract expires June 30, and the Predators offered him a job in their hockey operations department. The two-time Jack Adams finalist made it clear in a very emotional news conference before Poile spoke that he appreciated the offer but wants to keep coaching. "I love Nashville, but now Im going to have to beat you," Trotz said with a smile. Poile refused to put a timetable on hiring a new coach or what type coach he wants. This will be his first search since hiring Trotz in August 1997 when the Predators were gearing up for the expansion franchises debut season in 1998-99. Trotz said he had not been contacted by any other teams when he spoke to reporters, but Poile said he will let the coach out of his contract instantly for another coaching job. Predators captain Shea Weber said the only NHL coach hes ever played for wont be out of a job long. "His resume speaks for itself," Weber said. Still, missing the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2001-02 and 2002-03 was too much for a franchise that needs to reach the post-season to sell tickets and generate crucial revenue. "We didnt win this year, we didnt win last year," Trotz said. "Theres no excuse. I expect us to be in the playoffs, the Nashville Predators expect us to be in the playoffs.dddddddddddd We didnt make it this year, so Im good with it." Trotz said losing goaltender Pekka Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, for 51 games to an E. coli infection in his surgically repaired left hip "blew a hole" through the Predators this season. Poile said having a healthy Rinne or even two more shootout wins after going 2-9 would have gotten Nashville into the playoffs. Poile said that would have at least delayed this coaching change. But the general manager noted that hes been thinking about needed changes since the Predators missed what both he and Trotz thought was their best chance at a Stanley Cup in 2011-12. That team lost 4-1 to Phoenix in the Western Conference semifinals. Trotz coached 1,196 games with Nashville, second only to Greg Popovich of the NBAs San Antonio Spurs for longest active coaching tenure in the four major sports. He is the only NHL coach to take his team to the playoffs in seven of eight seasons between 2003-04 and 2011-12, which included two conference semifinals. He was 19-31 in the post-season. But the Predators have been in transition since losing defenceman Ryan Suter to Minnesota as a free agent in July 2012 and matching a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet to keep Weber. Poile said hes been rebuilding the Predators "on the fly" over the past year. He said upcoming changes will not include Weber, who will remain with the Predators. With the lockout shortening the season, the Predators posted their first losing record (16-23-9) since 2002-03. Nashville spent more than $36 million on five free agents last July. Goalie Carter Hutton did post 20 wins in Rinnes absence, but the rest of the spending spree didnt produce the offence they wanted. With Rinnes hip keeping him sidelined, they finished 10th in the West going 38-32-12 with 88 points. "In the end, its our fault he got fired," said forward Patric Hornqvist, "and obviously thats a huge responsibility for us and we have to be better next year." BOSTON -- Jarome Iginlas slow start in Boston is now a distant memory. Iginla scored two goals, Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots, and the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins extended their winning streak to nine games with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night. Signed during the off-season to replace departed free agent Nathan Horton on the Bruins top line, Iginla has fit in perfectly. "We lose a guy that we thought would be back for us, in Horton. That was a big hole to fill," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Hes come in and filled that hole really well. You mention the stats, he brings us the same thing the other guy did with his size and scoring ability. Hes done a great job. "Were talking about a veteran here with tremendous leadership qualities. Hes certainly been a great asset to our team." Iginlas scoring didnt come for a while with Boston. He didnt net his first goal until his ninth game, and had just five in his first 29. But now he is scoring goals even when his shots are blocked. The Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead 3:52 into the second period on Iginlas first of the game. His shot was deflected by the stick of defenceman Jonas Brodin and popped into the air. Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper appeared to lose sight of the puck, and it bounced between his pads just before he dropped. Iginla was smiling along the boards when his teammates came to congratulate him. Iginla added an empty-netter, his team-leading 25th goal, with 65 seconds to play. "It was a very fluky, fortunate bounce goal. Ill definitely take them," he said, flashing a similar smile while standing in front of his locker. The Bruins increased their conference lead to five points over idle second-place Pittsburgh by posting their longest winning streak since a 10-game run in November 2011. Boston is 12-1-2 in its last 15 games. Loui Eriksson and Reilly Smith also scored for Boston, which beat the Wild at home for the first time after losing the first six meetings. The Bruins are 3-10 overall against the Wild, who began play in the 2000-01 season. "They were real consistent in how they played," Minnesota defenceman Keith Ballard said. "Theyve got good balance to their lineup." Jason Pominville had the only goal for Minnesota, which lost for the fifth time in six games, but three of those defeats came in shootouts. Kuemper made 25 saves. About 2 1-2 minutes after Iginlas first goal, Rask robbed Mikko Koivu with a glove stop on a shot from in front. He also made a right-pad save on Nino Niederreiters shot from the left circle with just over 2 1-2 minutes left in the game. "Our goaltending has been outstanding all year without question," Iginla said. "They give us a chance every night with big momentum shifts. We also feel as the game goes on we can start playing physical to start taking over the game and try to wear teams down." Rask played like what the Wild expected to face. "He was very good. We knew that going into the game, and he was as good as people say he is," Koivu said. "He made some great saves." Boston made it 2-0 at 11:55 when Carl Soderberg circled the net and sent a backhanded pass across the crease and through a group of players to Eriksson, who one-timed it into the net. Pominville cut it to 2-1 with 1:26 left in the second. He unloaded a slap shot, and the blade of his stick broke. It flew toward Rask as the puck sailed by his glove inside the near post. BOSTON -- Lose the no-hitter, win the game. Thats a trade Anibal Sanchez and the Detroit Tigers were happy to make to take the lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL championship series. Sanchez and four relievers came within two outs of the first combined no-hitter in post-season history, striking out 17 to beat Boston 1-0 in the series opener on Saturday night. "I wasnt worried about a no-hitter," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Would have been nice. There were several guys involved. But it worked out well for us." Sanchez struck out 12 -- including a record-tying four in the first inning -- but also walked a season-high six and was pulled after six innings and 116 pitches. Al Alburquerque, Jose Veras, Drew Smyly and Benoit stretched the no-hitter through eight innings. With one out in the ninth, Daniel Nava lined a single to centre field off Joaquin Benoit to end Detroits bid for the third post-season no-hitter ever. Stephen Drew flied out to right and, with the potential tying run on second, Xander Bogaerts hit a game-ending popout to shortstop that put the Tigers ahead in the best-of-seven series. Bostons Clay Buchholz will face major league wins leader Max Scherzer in Game 2 on Sunday night. Jhonny Peralta had an RBI single off Jon Lester in the sixth for the games only run. Peralta, who missed most of August and September while serving a 50-game suspension for violating baseballs drug rules, was taunted with chants of "Steroids!" and "User!" as he looped a single to centre to bring home Miguel Cabrera. It was a day for pitching in the playoffs -- St. Louis beat the Dodgers 1-0 in the second game of the NLCS, marking the first time in post-season history two games ended by that score on one day. "That tells you the quality of pitching in the post-season," Leyland said. "Weve got to do a lot better with our opportunities, but in this one we were able to hold on." The majors highest-scoring team during the regular season, the Red Sox were shut out at Fenway Park in the post-season for the first time in 95 years. The ALs regular-season ERA champion, Sanchez loaded the bases in the sixth on three walks. But he struck out Stephen Drew to end the inning, coming off the mound with a celebratory arm pump and high leg kick. Alburquerque pitched a perfect seventh, Veras got two outs and Smyly retired David Ortiz on a harmless fly ball to centre to end the eighth. Drew kept the score close for Boston in the bottom of the eighth, racing into shallow centre field to make a juggling, over-the-shoulder catch on Prince Fielders looper with runners on second and third. Benoit struck out Mike Napoli to start the ninth before Nava singled to end the no-hit bid. "Whether it was Sanchez or every guy they brought out of the bullpen, it was power stuff," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "To chase a very good starter after six innings, I thought we succeeded in that right. Were down a run. That game is still very much in the balance with every time we come to the plate. ... We achieved what we set out to do and that was to get in the bullpen in the middle innings. And, unfortunately, it didnt work out." In all, Lester gave up six hits and a walk, striking out four in 6 1-3 innings. Two nights after Justin Verlander took a no-hit bid into the seventh to finish off Oakland in the AL division series, Sanchez had a similar effort against the Red Sox. His four strikeouts in the first inning -- thanks to a third-strike wild pitch to Shane Victorino -- tied the major league record for a post-season game set by the Cubs Orval Overall in the 1908 World Series. Its the first time in baseball post-season history a team has had back-to-back games in which its starting pitcher had a no-hitter through five innings. On a brisk night with the wind blowing in from centre, the Tigers got the only run they needed in the sixth after Cabrera drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Fielder was hit by a pitch. Victor Martinez hit a sharp grounder to short for the force at second, but he beat the relay throw to first by inches to keep the inning alive. Peralta then knocked a 2-2 pitch to centre to score Cabrera from third. Detroit threatened when Martinez doubled to lead off the fifth, but he was caught off second base on Omar Infantes sharp grounder to first. Alex Avila singled, and Infante took third when Victorino bobbled the ball in right. On Jose Iglesias grounder, third baseman Will Middlebrooks threw the ball home to retire the lead runner. Austin Jackson flied out to right, ending the inning. NOTES: Don Larsen threw a perfect game for the New York Yankees against Brooklyn in the 1956 World Series, and Roy Halladay pitched a no-hitter for Philadelphia in the 2010 NL division series. ... The Red Sox were shut out for only the second time in 78 post-season games at Fenway Park, the first since losing to the Chicago Cubs 3-0 in Game 5 of the 1918 World Series. ... No Tigers pitcher had ever struck out four batters in an inning before, regular season or post-season. ... Victorinos stolen base in the first gave the Red Sox seven in the post-season, tying a franchise record set in 2004. ... The Red Sox sent Sanchez to the Florida Marlins in the deal that brought Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett to Boston after the 2005 season. He was traded to Detroit last season. ... It was Lesters fourth Game 1 start, surpassing Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez and Beckett for most in franchise history. ... The 17 strikeouts by Tigers pitchers tie the record for a nine-inning post-season game. It happened twice before. ... It was only Bostons second shutout in 78 post-season home games, according to STATS. The other was in the 1918 World Series, when the Cubs beat them 3-0 in Game 5. CALGARY -- A career night for Eric Nystrom was supposed to feel a whole lot better. Despite scoring four goals against his former team, Calgary got two goals from David Jones and the deciding shootout goal from Sean Monahan in the Flames 5-4 comeback victory over the Nashville Predators. "We had it in our hands and we let it slip away," Nystrom said quietly, as he sat dejectedly in his locker. Drafted 10th overall by the Flames in the 2002 NHL Draft, Nystrom had never scored more than twice in 457 career games. "Ive had some really bad luck this season so its nice to be rewarded but at the same time, it really means nothing when it comes to a win and a loss," he said. "Ill take the win every day of the week." Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, Calgary climbed back to within one on Jones first goal in 18 games at 1:24. After Nystrom restored the two-goal cushion at 10:47, the Flames answered right back less than two minutes later with Mikael Backlund deflecting in Kris Russells point shot for Calgarys third power-play goal of the night. Jones tied it at 13:36, deflecting Brodies shot over Devan Dubnyks shoulder. "It feels great. Weve been on the other end of this so many times so to come back twice from two goals down, that means a lot for our team," Jones said. In the shootout, it was tied 1-1 after three shooters, with Jiri Hudler scoring for the Flames and Roman Josi connecting for the visitors, when Flames coach Bob Hartley gave Monahan the tap on the shoulder. The Flames 19-year-old leading scorer made no mistake notching his third goal in six attempts this year -- all of them the deciding goal. "Huds came down and brought it to his backhand and something opened up so I tried to do the same thing and fortunately enough, I found a spot through his five hole," said Monahan, who says he enjoys having the game on his stick. "Its pretty crazy. The crowds pretty loud there. Its a little bit of pressure on you but as a hockey player, youve got to like being in those situations and thats something I like to do," Monahan said. Reto Berra clinched the win and improved to 4-0 in shootouts this season, sprawling acrobatically to get a pad on a deke from Ryan Ellis. Berra, 27, has yet to win a game in regulation in his first year in the NHL. Hes 6-14-2 with his other two victories coming in overtime. Despite having a big night, Jones was happy to watch the shootout from the bench. "I try to hide in that situation," said Jones with a chuckle. "I like the guys we have in it. They know what theyre doing and this Monahan kid is something else. "Once I knew he was going. I was ready to just get off the bench because I knew we were going to get the two points." Mark Giordano also scored for Calgary (18-27-7), which wins consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 12 and 14. The goal extends Giordanos points sreak to a career-high six-games (3-3-6). With the single point, Nashville (23-22-8) moved within seven points of one of the two wildcard spots in the Western Conference, currently held by Minnesota and Vancouver. But it was the point that they didnt get that the Predators were talking about. "Its frustrating," said Nystrom. "Three out of four on this road trip is good when you look at the big picture but right now were in such a race, we need every point that we can get." Nashville coach Barry Trotz pointed to Jones goal early in the third as the one that turned the game around. "They scored the second goal, its 3-2 and they have all the momentum," said Trotz. "Then we played losing hockey where were trading chances. Thats now how you play. The whole game and the momentum changed on the second goal." Nystrom entered the night with one goal in his previous 19 games, but he wasted little time giving Nashville the early lead as he fired a shot past Karri Ramo from the slot just 1:51 into the game. Nystrom made it 2-1 1:50 into the second then made it 3-1 five minutes later, tipping Paul Gaustads shot from deep in the corner over Ramos shoulder. Ramo was promptly pulled by Flames coach Bob Hartley after Nystroms third goal, leaving the game with nine saves on 12 shots. It was the first time Ramo had been pulled this season. "I went to Karri and I told him, Im trying to turn the game over. They were two flukey goals," Hartley said. "It seems that we were just falling into the hole that we were digging ourselves. Sometimes you need to change the momentum." Dubnyk was making his second start since being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers on Jan. 15 in a trade for Matt Hendricks. He had 27 saves while Berra, in relief, had 12. Notes: The Flames had multiple power-play goals for just the second time since Oct. 21. The last time they had two was Dec. 23... Last September, Wayne Gretzky, Scotty Bowman, Darryl Sittler and countless other hockey legends assembled in Toronto to see one of the greatest teams ever assembled. Not on the ice, but on the big screen. Gabe Polsky’s Red Army – a feature documentary about the rise and fall of Soviet hockey in the 1970s and 1980s – had its Canadian debut at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and now, it’s hitting Canadian cinemas. “That Toronto event was probably one of the greatest moments of my life,” Polsky said of the Toronto premiere that filled the Ryerson Theatre with a who’s-who of hockey stars past and present. Amazingly, these luminaries had all come to see a story in which they were merely the supporting cast. ARMY BY NAME, ARMY BY NATURE Hockey fans from the 1980s best remember the Soviets from the teams weapon of choice: The Green Unit. The front line of the Soviet attack was a five-man powerhouse that dominated international hockey for a decade, impressed in goodwill barnstorming tours against National Hockey League clubs and stunned a Team Canada which included key pieces of both the Oilers and Islanders dynasties to win the 1981 Canada Cup. The combination featured Sergei Makarov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov up front with Alexei Kasatonov and Viacheslav Fetisov on the point. These five starred in Polsky’s film, but Fetisov in particular stepped off the blue line and into the spotlight. The mercurial defenceman opened up to provide an inside look behind the Iron Curtain’s most formidable on-ice force. Polsky remembered his trip to Russia to track down the Green Unit alumni and the difficulty in nailing Fetisov into the interview that provided the soul of his film. “He said 15 minutes, but then he never really checked his watch and he just kept going,” Polsky said of what became an estimated six-hour chat. “I think we started connecting a little bit and he started to see that I didn’t come in there with any expectations.” “Maybe he thought I was a little bit weird or young and that kind of opened him up a little bit. It was kind of like in a hockey locker room and I was like a rookie, or something. He was the veteran and just kinda giving me s***.” But what he ended up giving Polsky was rare candor and the details of a system that remains shrouded in mystery. The Soviet national program, handed down from one of Russian hockey’s founding fathers (Anatoli Tarasov) to the divisive personage of Viktor Tikhonov, was outright military. Kept in barracks nearly year-round, the training regimen that led to two Olympic gold medals and six IIHF World Championships between 1980 and 1990 was part training camp and part internment camp. Fetisov recalls Tikhonov refusing teammate Andrei Khomutov leave to visit his dying father and that team officials later threatened Fetisov when the NHL came calling in the late 80s. “You try to play for our enemies?” Fetisov recalls being told by team officials in the film. “I’ll send you to Siberia. You’ll never get out.” Polsky used archival footage to get beyond the on-ice story. Yes, there were highlights from the Miracle on Ice and the 1981 Canada Cup triumph, but equal screen time was given to a war-torn post-World War II Russian society and historical footage of strange training routines and exhibitions involving summersaults, gymnastics and bears on skates. The resulting film went beyond the on-ice product to a deeper political discussion that raged between two opposing powers. “To the Soviets sports were, in a way, a kind of warfare,” renowned Cold War-era journalist Vladimir Posner said in Red Army. “The game for them wasn’t just a game, it was also part of what you would call propaganda, actually, making it very clear that: ‘We’re the best. And, we’re the best because of the Soviet system. Because of socialism, that’s why we’re the best.” Polsky sought balance between the sport and the state to a wider Western audience. “This movie goes a long way in explaining the history and what shaped these people and what their experiences were,” he said. “North Americans are not familiar with who these people are on a human level. We read a couple things and all we really know are the clichés to a degree and I think this reveals a bit more of the soul of the country.” COMING TO (NORTH) AMERICA The Red Army stars had given all they could for their homeland. It was time to take on the world’s best players. Hockey Hall-of-Famer Mike Gartner had more experience playing against Fetisov than nearly anyone before Russians began to flood the NHL. He dealt with his future Hall-of-Fame classmate in three World Championships, Canada Cups the World Junior Championship and even a midget hockey invitational in 1975. “He had great vision on the ice from an offensive standpoint, but he was so strong and he was so hard to get around,” Gartner said. “He was tough. He had the whole package and he played a lot. It seemed like he was on the ice all the time.” “He was a well-respected player.” Canada had to better equip itself to handle the Soviet onslaught after 1981. Shell-shocked 8-1 in the Canada Cup Final, the Canadians knew they needed to load up to beat the Green Unit. “We had to put our absolute best players on the ice to be in the same category as the Red Army team,” Gartner said of the Canadian teams that won the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups. “Here was a team that was put together with players that played with each other from youth in a system that was developing robotic, talented athletes. We couldn’t compete unless we had our best players at the top of their games.” AUDIO: Mike Gartner on Slava Festisov Soon enough, though, the Soviets best was no longer strictly an international concern. Beginning with the 1989 defection of Alexander Mogilny, the door to the NHL was finally open to the Green Unit. Within one year the Berlin Wall toppled, Communist governments fell in Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia, and stars began moving westward. But how would they adapt? The Green Unit in the Soviet Union PLAYER SEASONS GP G A PTS CHAMPIONSHIPS USSR STATS Slava Fetisov 14 478 153 221 374 9 (2 OLY, 7 IIHF) 143 - 51 - 95 - 146 Alexei Kasatonov 14 529 119 196 315 7 (2 OLY, 5 IIHF) 125 - 28 - 67 - 95 Vladimir Krutov 12 439 288 215 503 7 (2 OLY, 5 IIHF) 112 - 73 - 64 - 137 Igor Larionov 12 457 204 230 434 6 (2 OLY, 4 IIHF) 103 - 36 - 51 - 87 Sergei Makarov 13 519 322 388 710 10 (2 OLY, 8 IIHF) 145 - 83 - 89 - 172 The move to North America went smoother for some than for others. Makarov debuted with 86 points for the Calgary Flames at 31 years of age and won the 1989-90 Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year. He forever stamped his name on the League. The NHL has had “The Makarov Rule” in place ever since, limiting Calder eligibility to players aged 26 and under. Fetisov and Larionov made solid impacts in New Jersey and Vancouver, respectively before separate trades reunited them in Detroit in 1995. Under Bowman, the Red Wings revived the Soviet style – puck possession, precision passing and meticulous patience to create the perfect scoring chance - to establish one of the League’s most formidable power plays. The two Green Unit alumni were complemented by Sergei Fedorov (not pictured), Vyacheslav Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov to form the Wings’ “Russian Five” combination in the mid-90s. The experiment was an unmitigated success helping the Wings capture back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998. The five accounted for 10 of the Wings’ 17 power play goals in the 1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the forward trio produced a combined 45 points in 20 games. A career-ending accident took Konstantinov out of the line-up for the second Cup, but the team – and his Russian replacement Dmitri Mironov – rallied around the fallen blueliner. Krutov and Kasatonov, meanwhile enjoyed mixed results. Kasatonov lasted seven years in the NHL before injuries derailed his career. Krutov, though, was gone after just one season. He left the Vancouver Canucks after an 11-goal 1989-90 season and finished his playing career in Europe. The IIHF Hall-of-Famer died at 51 years old in 2012, mere months after conducting his Red Army interview. Polskys time with Krutov was emotional. “He almost embodied the Russian soul, like the sadness of this heartbroken guy, still living in the past and the glory of the past and he couldn’t really make it once he got all this freedom and independence. He didn’t know what to do with it,” Polsky said. “He had achieved so much and he had a good heart and was a loyal guy and just a nice genuine guy with a great heart, but he just couldn’t make it. He died of heartache, you know?” A DEMILITARIZED STATE After conquering the world and the NHL, one might think Russian hockey could only remain dominant. Polsky’s narrative ended with the Red Wings’ Russian heroes triumphantly bringing the Stanley Cup to Red Square surrounded by the adoring Moscow masses. Internationally, however, the best had arguably already past. Russia won the World Championship in 1993 led by the aforementioned Khomutov and his 12 points in eight games. However, that victory was the beginning of a vacuum. The Russians did not win another World Championship until 2008 when an aging Fedorov teamed with his then-Washington-Capital-teammates, Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin, to win gold in an overtime thriller. Since the foundation of the Kontinental HockeyLeague - Russias new top division - in 2008-09, the nation has won three of six IIHF World Championships. A true All-Star team, featuring KHL standouts aided by Russian NHLers out of the Stanley Cup chase, has been afforded the Russian team since the KHL season ends prior to the beginning of the Worlds. In recent years, that has included the likes of Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin. However, a true best-on-best title has eluded them since 1981. The nation may have reached a new low point with the 2014 Olympic Games. Playing on Russian soil and under the constant gaze of President Vladimir Putin, Finland clipped them in the quarter-finals, forcing a Russian exit from the Sochi Games without even a shot at a medal in hockey. Polsky blamed a shift away from the Soviet system. “They produce individual players still, very talented individuals and they still exhibit some of the Russian characteristics of strong skating and puckhandling,” Polsky said, “but there’s no collective five-man unit type of play - that beautiful collective creativity - anymore.” What was lost - in his mind - was a true art form. “When you see something incredible and a level of mastery, it doesn’t matter if it’s painting or literature or architecture or anything, it’s self-evident, how beautiful it is,” Polsky said. “It’s the same thing with hockey. When you see amazing hockey and vision and skill and passing and movement, it’s self-evident. You don’t have to be a hockey fan to appreciate it.” Red Army opens in select theatres in Toronto and Vancouver on Jan. 30. On a successful day for the Merseyside clubs, Everton won 3-1 at last-place Fulham to close to within four points of fourth-place Arsenal ahead of their meeting at Goodison Park next weekend. Liverpool -- the leagues top scorers -- produced another masterful attacking display against a porous Spurs defence, with Younes Kabouls second-minute own-goal added to by strikes from Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson to seal an eighth straight win for the Reds. They made the most of Chelseas 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace on Saturday and are two points clear of Jose Mourinhos side with six games left. Manchester City, which drew 1-1 at fourth-place Arsenal, is two points further back in third and crucially has two games in hand. The destiny of the Premier League is in Liverpools hands, though, and the momentum is with them. "Youll Never Walk Alone" -- the clubs anthem -- is being sung with renewed gusto before every game while scarves and flags are out in force in the stands, recalling the period in the late-1970s and early 1980s when Liverpool was the dominant team not just in England but in Europe. "Outstanding team performance and I thought the supporters were brilliant -- thats as good as Ive heard at Anfield since Ive been manager here," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "Its been a tough period over 20-odd years, and they can see something building here." Chelsea and City must come to Anfield next month and they will not relish the task one bit. Certainly Spurs didnt look up for the fight -- they conceded after 97 seconds and were all over the place in defence on another dire performance against a leading club. Kaboul, who endured a miserable match, turned a deflected cross into his own net to set Liverpool on its way and substitute centre back Michael Dawson inadvertently set Suarez clear in the 25th for the Urugguayan to put away his 29th league goal of the season -- a Liverpool record in the Premier League era, surpassing Robbie Fowler (from 1995-96).dddddddddddd "The game was pretty much finished after two mistakes early on. They took a lot of belief from that and went from strength to strength," said Spurs manager Tim Sherwood, whose team is sixth and now eight points off fourth-place Arsenal in the race for the final Champions League qualification spot. The second half was just as one-sided, with Coutinho finishing off a wonderful team goal in the 55th with a low drive from 25 metres before Hendersons inswinging free kick missed everyone in the area and landed in the bottom corner. "For us, the mantra has always been to focus on the next game, we never get too carried away," said Rodgers, again downplaying Liverpools title hopes. "It is very difficult, theres lots of people dreaming about Liverpool winning the title." The way Everton is playing, there could yet be two Merseyside clubs in the Champions League next season. Roberto Martinezs side secured a fifth consecutive league win thanks to an improved second-half performance at Craven Cottage, where it took the lead in the 50th when Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale turned a deflected shot by Steven Naismith into his own net. Ashjan Dejagah drew Fulham level in the 71st with a stunning 25-meter drive that beat Tim Howard at his near post, but well-taken goals by Kevin Mirallas and Naismith in the final 11 minutes saw Everton home. Everton is now four points above Spurs and has a game in hand over them and Arsenal, whose trip to Goodison Park next Sunday could have a massive bearing in the race for fourth. "Im not saying were going to get that because we admire Arsenal because they get in the Champions League consistently," Martinez said. "They have developed a real understanding (of) what to do in these games, so that makes Sunday a phenomenal challenge. "It will probably go down to the last game of the season." Fulham stayed bottom and is five points adrift of safety. Cheap China Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NHL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys From China China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Heavy fog allowed Brian Gay a quick nap, and he no longer felt so sluggish after travelling halfway around the world from Shanghai to Sea Island. Gay had enough energy Thursday to make eight birdies on his way to a 7-under 63, giving him a share of the lead with Briny Baird among early starters in the McGladrey Classic. The opening round could not be completed because of a fog delay lasting nearly two hours. Once the sun burned off the fog, the Seaside course was a pushover with virtually no wind. George McNeill ran off five straight birdies and was 8 under with two hole remaining. Will MacKenzie reached 7 under through 16 holes until dropping three shots in two holes for a 66. The morning fog off coastal waters could not have been better for Gay. "I was super tired," he said. Players were told the round would resume when the fog lifted. Gay didnt want to stand around on the range. He also wanted to stay loose. So he took a chance by going into the locker room at Sea Island, relaxed in a leather chair for a quick nap and then warmed up for the second time. "I felt pretty good when I teed off," he said. "I felt like I had a lot more energy." The McGladrey Classic is the third event in Gays most unusual itinerary -- four PGA Tour events in four weeks in four countries. He started two weeks ago at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia, and then flew eight hours to Shanghai for the HSBC Champions. He would not have played this week except that its only about three hours from his home in Orlando, Fla., and he loves the Seaside course. And then hell finish out the fall portion of the PGA Tour schedule next week in Mexico. Scott Piercy and Boo Weekley also were in China last week, and each opened with a 67. Calgarys Stephen Ames also shot a 67. No one was as thrilled with the start as Baird, who is returning from surgery on both shoulders. Baird last played a PGA Tour event in 2012 when he started feeling pain in his left shoulder, and then his right shoulder. He tried a cortisone shot and rehab before he realized surgery would be required. He had the operations only a month apart, and then tried to return too soon by playing Web.com Tour events. Finally, hes healthy enough to swing a club and even lift his shoulders over his head. He would like to think hes strong enough to lift a trophy over his head, though its something Baird has never experienced. This is 365th start on the PGA Tour, and he still hasnt won. It bothers him, though not as much as people might think. "Id probably rather be the guy thats won the most money and not won than the guy who has won the least amount and won once," Baird said. "When you hear that catch-phrase, that does drive you a little nuts that were only out here playing for trophies. I kind of cringe at that because thats not true. Otherwise, wed just be donating our money to charity and living in huts. So its not entirely true." One aspect about that is true -- Baird needs money to keep his full PGA Tour card. He is on a major medical exemption, meaning he needs $463,399 to reach a level that would allow him to keep his card the rest of the season. Webb Simpson, who won in Las Vegas last month for his first win this year, was at 65 along with Kevin Kisner, Kevin Chappell and Seung-yul Noh. Gay finished the HSBC Champions in time to get to the airport for a 6 p.m. flight home -- nearly 14 hours to Chicago, two more hours to Orlando, a short layover in between. He tried to relax Monday, but he has been getting up in the middle of the morning and figures hes a few days away from recovering from his jet lag. There was nothing wrong with his game that a few long putts couldnt fix. Gay usually has his caddie read the putts, but after he missed an 8-footer on the first hole, his caddie left that part up to him. Gay didnt use him the rest of the way, and he was helped by rolling in three putts from the 30-foot range. "I wasnt feeling very good at all this morning," Gay said. "Ive struggled the last few days sleeping and been really tried. But a nice day. Solid. Hit the ball nice, made a couple of long putts. Just a good day." McNeill had a few fleeting thoughts of a 59 when he made his fifth straight birdie to get to 6-under with eight holes remaining. He missed an 8-foot birdie at No. 2, and when faced with a tough par-saving putt, he realized he should worry more about his next shot than his odds of breaking 60. He had to return Friday morning with 49 other players to finish off the round. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., opened with an even par 70, while David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., turned in a 4-over 70. Ottawas Brad Fritsch was 3-over through 11 holes. Michael Kors Cyber Monday Deals . The steady progress of Devin Harris had a lot to do with the surge. Nowitzki scored 23 points, Harris had a season-high 16 and the Mavericks pulled away from Cleveland 124-107 Monday night, handing the Cavaliers their fifth straight loss. Open title at Pebble Beach to winning the match that gave Europe victory in the Ryder Cup. Last years camp is basically out the window. It doesnt matter too much. Ive got to come in and play my game and let them know what kind of player I am.First impression is pretty huge in any profession so Ive just got to go out there and do my best.Shinkaruk is among the players taking part in the Canucks four-team rookie tournament in Penticton that also includes prospects from the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets.Canucks GM Jim Benning and head coach Willie Desjardins will have lots to mull over, including a number of players like Shinkaruk who they had no part in drafting.I think youve just got to come in and play your game, said the outgoing Shinkaruk. Obviously we all have an opportunity to catch the GM and coachs eye, and thats what youve got to do. Weve got to go out there, have fun, but most of all, play our game. Im sure if I do that everything will work out well.Shinkaruk played just 18 games last season for the Tigers before undergoing surgery on his hip after being cut from Canadas world junior hockey camp, but in his 2013 draft year the five-foot-10, 185-pound Calgary native amassed 37 goals and 49 assists in 64 games.Obviously last year was a pretty emotional year, said Shinkaruk. I went through a lot. It feels really good to be back on the ice and know my hips 100 per cent.Among the other players under the microscope at the rookie tournament who should be at the Canucks training camp when it gets underway on Thursday are centre Bo Horvat and right-winger Nicklas Jensen.Horvat was selected ninth overall in 2013 with the pick the team received in the trade with the New Jersey Devils for goaltender Cory Schneider, and like Shinkaruk, he knows hes starting from scratch.Im just playing my game, playing a good two-way game and making a good first impression on the new (coaches), said 19-year-old from Rodney, Ont. This is the first time some of them have seen some of us play and this tournament is a good opportunity to show our stuff and show them why we deserve to be here.Travis Green coaches the Utica Comets, Vancouvers AHL affiliate, and is in charge of the Canucks rookie team. The former NHLer has been impressed with Horvat, who had 30 goals and 44 assists in 54 games with the OHLs London Knights in a 2013-14 campaign that included a spot on Canadas world junior team.Hes a real good player, without a doubt. He does a lot of good things that go unnoticed, said Green, who coached against Horvat when he was behhind the bench of the WHLs Portland Winterhawks at the 2013 Memorial Cup.dddddddddddd. Hes a guy that you know is going to play the right way. He doesnt cheat to make offence. He just plays a good 200-foot game. I really like him as a player. Its possible Shinkaruk could be sent to the AHL if he doesnt make the Canucks, but its either the NHL or back to junior for Horvat, who might get a nine-game tryout with Vancouver to start the season before his entry-level deal kicks in.For me I just dont want to make things too cute — just play my game, play the way I got noticed in the first place, he said. I cant play out of my comfort zone. Ive got to play the way that got me here. The six-foot, 206-pound Horvat gets extra attention from fans and media because of the goalie controversy that precipitated the draft-day trade that brought him to Vancouver, but he said its something that hasnt really crossed his mind much recently.Im sure its going to be brought up throughout my whole career, being part of the Schneider trade, said Horvat. I try not to think about it too much. Hes a goaltender, Im a player.Another Vancouver prospect with legitimate NHL aspirations this season at the rookie tournament is left-winger Niklas Jensen. He split time between the Comets and Canucks last season, registering three goals and three assists in 17 NHL games. The 29th overall selection at the 2011 draft, Jensen is at his third rookie tournament — which could be viewed as a slight — but instead hes embracing the opportunity.Youve got to show up and prove that you want to be here every night, said the 21-year-old from Herning, Denmark. I had a good little run last year but I kind of have to forget about that and start all over and work as hard as you can when you get out there and prove that you want to earn a spot.Like any player looking to make an NHL roster, Jensen know its a numbers game, with maybe one forward spot open on the Canucks after a number of new faces were brought in up front to compete for jobs.If you do as well as they want you to do theyll give you a chance, said Jensen, who has good size at six foot two and 208 pounds. Thats what were all here for, to take that opportunity. Were all fighting for maybe one spot, if (that).Green said its not uncommon for a player to take longer to develop in the professional ranks, as appears to be the case with Jensen. Its a big jump for guys to the NHL at 19, 20, 21, said Green. Sometimes it takes being 22, 23 years old when youre ready to play there full time. Its definitely not make or break time for him.For his part, Shinkaruk is just soaking up the experience, knowing that hes healthy and has a real chance to influence his immediate future in front of a new coach and GM.Its just up to us and how well we play and how hard we come in. I wouldnt have it any other way, he said. If someone told me four years ago Id be trying out for an NHL team and its up to the way I play, I would have taken that and smiled. Its a pretty cool chance that I have and Im just trying to make the best of it.Note: Jake Virtanen, the sixth overall pick in June, is skating with the Canucks prospects but has not been cleared for contact after undergoing shoulder surgery in the spring. Louis Rams had some fun during the coin toss of Sunday’s game at the expense of the Washington Redskins.OAKLAND, Calif. -- During a players meeting following the All-Star break, Jermaine ONeal promised his teammates to play the rest of the regular season like he would never play again -- because he very well might not. The 18-year NBA veteran has backed up his words more than anybody ever expected. ONeal had season highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds to carry the load for an undermanned frontcourt, and the Golden State Warriors held off the Brooklyn Nets 93-86 Saturday night for their third straight victory since the break. "Whatever I have, Im going to leave it on the able. Ive said that quite a few times, but Im dead serious," said the 36-year-old ONeal, who missed extensive time following surgery on his wrist earlier this season. "You may have to wheel me out of here at the end of the season, but thats what Im going to do." With Andrew Bogut sidelined with a left shoulder injury and David Lee out with a stomach flu, ONeal followed up his game-saving block that preserved Golden States overtime victory against Houston on Thursday night with a vintage performance. ONeal shot 10 for 13 from the floor, and Draymond Green scored a career-best 18 points to go with 10 rebounds starting in Lees place. Stephen Curry banked in a big 3-pointer in the final minute to finish with 17 points, and the Warriors won three games in a row for the first time since the Nets ended their 10-game winning streak on Jan. 8 in Brooklyn -- crediting ONeal for leading the way in the locker room and on the court. "Hes getting an opportunity to put a stamp on what he says," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "Its no longer what he says, its what hes doing." The veteran Nets never matched the intensity. Deron Williams had 20 points and six assists, and Joe Johnson scored 15 points for Brooklyn, which struggled to shoot from 3-point range and was just as careless passing. Brooklyn made just 2 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc and committed 16 turnovers. "I thought we had a lot of good shots, they just didnt fall," said Nets forward Paul Pierce, who scored 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting. "Sometimes you live by the 3, you die by the 3. We should attack more, especially with them limited in their big men." The Nets made sure the game moved at a plodding pace untill the final minutes.dddddddddddd Johnson made an 18-foot fadeaway to tie the score at 84 with 2:22 remaining. Green followed with two free throws, then Andray Blatche converted a tying layup. ONeal drew a foul on the other end and hit two free throws -- getting another chance after missing his second attempt because of a hitch in his release that drew a lane violation -- to give Golden State an 88-86 lead. On Brooklyns next possession, Johnsons pass was deflected before hitting Williams hands and landing out of bounds. Curry quickly came back by banking in a 3-pointer to put the Warriors up 91-86 with 37 seconds remaining and put the game out of reach. The win moved the Warriors (34-22) a season-high 12 games over .500. They begin a six-game road trip -- all against Eastern Conference opponents -- at Detroit on Monday. Golden States smaller lineup gave the Nets fits from the start. Curry hit two 3-pointers during an 18-6 run to open the game. Brooklyns slow start compounded when Shaun Livingston left in the first quarter with a bruised tailbone after falling hard when he was fouled by Harrison Barnes going for a layup. The team said X-rays on Livingston were negative. Just like they did in Brooklyn, though, the Nets rallied from an early deficit against Golden States second unit. Brooklyn took the lead for the first time when Williams started a three-point play on a layup over Andre Iguodala, putting the Nets up 46-44 late in the second quarter. They never led again. "Even though we didnt shoot the ball extremely well from behind the arc, it was a game until the last minute," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "On the road against a team like Golden State, thats all you can ask for." NOTES: Green said he was in an accident driving to the game, but that no one was injured. ... Nets G Marcus Thornton sat out with a stomach illness. He has yet to play since being traded from Sacramento on Wednesday for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans. ... Warriors coach Mark Jackson said Bogut, who missed his seventh straight game because of an ailing left shoulder, will likely return at some point during the Warriors six-game road trip. ... The Warriors signed C Hilton Armstrong to a 10-day contract, calling him from the teams NBA Development League affiliate in Santa Cruz. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi, The Leafs/Canadiens game Saturday night was very entertaining, right up until the penalty in overtime against Bernier and the Leafs. Can you please explain what Bernier did wrong to be awarded that penalty in OT? Thanks,Brad Mains
Kerry, In the game last night - Leafs and Habs - the ref called a penalty on Bernier for delay of game in OT. I know it is a rule in the books, but has not been called, IMO, very much. It is the rule, but my question is this - Was calling it OT a fair thing to do? I realize the ref was damned if did and damned if not! What is your take on this. Cheers! Ray Bungay
Kerry: In the Toronto - Montreal game, there was a penalty handed to Bernier of Toronto for Delay of game for coming out of his net and smothering the puck with a Montreal player right there. This seems an unusual if not unnecessary call, given it was in the overtime. I have never seen this before. What is the basis for the call? Your views would be helpful. Ted Baskerville
Hi Kerry,The Leafs Habs game Saturday night, the overtime penalty assessed to Bernier. I have seen many goalies cover the puck well outside their crease, I asked a goalie friend of mine and he said he was taught as long as the goalie can reach or has some part of himself in the crease it can be covered outside of the crease. Is this a rule? I believe Bernier was still in the crease when he dove at the puck then slid for another couple of feet. Was that the right call or am I just another bitter Leafs fan. Thanks,Chris Stevens Brad, Ray, Ted and Chris: I dont want to add fuel to the "bitterness" some Leafs fans might feel or even demonstrate on occasion but the delay of game penalty that Jonathan Bernier was assessed in the overtime loss to the Canadiens on Saturday was a must call for the referee to make regardless of the score or the time remaining in the game! In every case, when a goalkeeper skates out of his net and covers on a loose puck that far from his crease a delay of game penalty should be assessed as per the rule. This infraction committed by the goalkeeper should applied with the same consistency as the puck over glass rule that we saw called against Peter Budaj (8:31 of first period) and Phil Kessel with just 31 seconds remaining in regulation time. From Rule 63.2: A minor penalty shall be imposed on any player, including the goalkeeper, who holds, freezes or plays the puck with his stick, skates or body in such a manner as to deliberately cause a stoppage of play. With regard to a goalkeeper, this rule applies outside of his goal crease area. If a goalkeeper comes out of his crease to "cut down the angle" on a shot and after making the save covers the puck, this shall be legal. If the goalkeeper races out of his crease in an attempt to beat the attacking player to the puck and instead of playing the puck jumps on the puck causing a stoppage of play, this shall be a minor penalty for delay of game. The long stretch pass that PK Subban fired near the Habs goal line was too hot for Daniel Briere to handle cleanly at the Leafs blue line and created a race for a loose puck with Bernier on the potential scoring opportunity. A scoring opportunity was clearly eliminated when Bernier got to the puck first and covered it with his glove to cause a stoppage in play as opposed to legally playing the puck with his goal stick. The referee whistled the play dead and raised his arms in an upward fashion but did not immediately or emphatically signal a penalty to Bernier as he should have. A slower, perhaps methodical response by the ref was evident in both the camera shot and the minute of run-on commentary by the broadcasters before it became evident to them that a penalty to Bernier had been assessed. While you have never seen this penalty called Ted, I can assure you that I personally assessed it a number of times during my 30-year NHL officiating career. Whenever I had the occasion to make this call I did so immediately with an emphatic signal so there was no doubt or confusion in anyones mind that a penalty was assessed to the goalkeeper in this unique situation. DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche are back in the post-season. But they may have to move on without Matt Duchene. If Semyon Varlamov continues his breakout season, the Avalanche might not miss their leading scorer. Varlamov had a season-high 47 saves and Colorado clinched its first playoff berth in four years with a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Center John Mitchell had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who moved past Chicago into second place in the Central Division with 100 points in what might have been a costly victory. Duchene suffered a left knee injury on the opening shift Saturday when he collided with teammate Jamie McGinn near the Sharks blue line. He fell to the ice and then gingerly skated to the bench. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Sunday. "Well know more after that," coach Patrick Roy said. "Its not good news for him and its not good news for us. Its the way its been all year." Despite the injuries -- Colorado has lost top-six forwards Alex Tanguay and P.A. Parenteau -- the constant has been Varlamov. He came through again against the relentless Sharks, who threw 74 shots at him. Colorado blocked 25. "Im guessing he was the first star," San Jose coach Todd McLellan said of Varlamov. "He should be." Down a player, Varlamov made up for it with an outstanding performance. He stopped 20 shots in the third period, many during the final minutes when the Sharks were trying to get the equalizer. His 37 wins are the most in the NHL and a big reason the Avalanche reached 100 points for the first time in 10 years. "Hes been tremendous," captain Gabe Landeskog said. "I think its safe to say we wouldnt be here without him." Colorado was a mainstay in the playoffs when the franchise moved to Denver in 1995. After winning the Stanley Cup for a second time in 2001, the Avalanche reached the Western Conference finals the following season before heading into lean times. Now they have a chance to return to the glory years with a young, eager group. "Were certainly not satisfied with just squeaking into the playoffs, we want to do damage," Landeskog said. Mitchell moved upp to centre Colorados top line, and came through with a big power-play goal to give Colorado a 3-1 lead at 6:32 of the second period.dddddddddddd "It came right to me slow enough so I could get a forehand shot and I just one-timed it into the back of the net," Mitchell said. "I was just at the right place at the right time." Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod also scored for Colorado. Varlamovs strong play beforehand helped Colorado maintain a 2-1 lead. The Sharks outshot the Avalanche 11-3 in the second, many of those coming early when they were trying to tie it. Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle scored for the Sharks, who are 1-2-2 in their past five games but still hold a slim lead for first place in the Pacific over Anaheim. Goalie Alex Stalock had 19 saves for San Jose before being pulled for an extra attacker in the final minute. "I thought we played extremely well, thought we generated a lot of chances," Joe Thornton said. "Its just sometimes you dont win those types of games." Boyle cut the lead to 3-2 when he took a pass from James Sheppard and scored off Varlamovs left shoulder 2:03 after Mitchell. It was his 10th goal of the season. The Sharks got a chance to tie on a 4-on-3 power play after Ryan OReilly took his first penalty of the season, a minor for playing with a broken stick. Stastnys 26th goal 1:33 into the game gave Colorado a 1-0 lead. Pavelski tied it on the power play less than two minutes later with his 38th. The Sharks had another power-play chance midway through the first, but McLeod sneaked behind the defence, took a long pass from Nick Holden off Boyles glove and beat Stalock to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. "I took my eye off the puck for a fraction of a second to make sure I wasnt going to get drilled," Boyle said. "I just caught a piece of it and missed it. Thats an unfortunate bounce." NOTES: Mitchell returned to the lineup after missing four games with a back injury. ... The Sharks reassigned F Freddie Hamilton to Worcester of the AHL on Friday. ... ROME -- UEFA President Michel Platini has promised a ruling from the organizations disciplinary body over an alleged racist comment by the Italian football federations new leader. Carlo Tavecchio, a long-standing executive in Italian football, was elected president last month despite causing a stir over a reference to bananas when discussing the presence of foreign players in Italy. While the Italian federations internal prosecutor dropped his inquiry over the comment, UEFA is expected to issue a ruling in the coming days. "I do not want to revisit what (Tavecchio) said," Platini said in his opening remarks Wednesday at UEFAs Respect and Diversity conference. "But UEFA has decided to open an inquiry and the disciplinary body will hand down a decision based on its (anti-racism) rules." Using a hypothetical name, Tavecchio had said: "In England they select players based on professionalism, whereas we say that Opti Poba is here, he was eating bananas before and now hes starting for Lazio and thats OK." Tavecchio, who also has a UEFA role as a member of its youth and amateur football committee, apologized for his comment and insisted he is not racist. He has decided not to participate in any UEFA activities until the ruling and was not at the conference -- even though his federation was the host. UEFA could suspend Tavecchio for one to three months and fine him if he is found guilty. In other issues, Platini expressed displeasure that discriminatory issues inside stadiums were not addressed at this years World Cup in Brazil FIFAs task force against racism provided evidence of fans in Brazil chanting gay slurs, wearing black face make-up and carrying banners with far-right symbols -- none of which resulted in sanctions. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Minnesota Twins traded veteran right-hander Kevin Correia to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night for a player to be named or cash. Correia was told late Saturday after the Twins 9-4 loss at Oakland that he was headed home to Southern California to be part of a pennant race in the familiar NL West. Minnesota will call up left-hander Tommy Milone from Triple-A Rochester to start Monday at Houston. Milone was acquired from the Athletics on the July 31 trade deadline after he requested to be moved following a demotion to the minors. Minnesota sent outfielder Sam Fuld back to Oakland in the swap. A fourth-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2002, Correia (5-13, 4.94 ERA) has pitched for the Giants and San Diego Padres. "Its nice to be able to go somewhere and play some important baseball games at the end of this year and its a place Im very familiar with, so its exciting," Correia said after saying his goodbyes to Twins teammates at his locker. "Its why we play this game. "Im getting toward the end of my career and you want to play in some meaningful games and Ill have the opportunity to do that over there." The NL West-leading Dodgers, who lost earlier Saturday at Milwaukee, were looking to boost the back end of their rotation. This past week, they acquired veteran right-hander Roberto Hernandez from the Phillies to fill Josh Becketts spot. Beckett went on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season Friday. Beckett, who is 6-6 with a 2.88 ERA in 20 starts for the Dodgers this season, has a left hip impingement. The move is retroactive to Aug. 4. He is expected to be out about two weeks. The 14-year veteran made three starts since being reinstated on July 22 from the same injury, which occurred on July 8. His first time on the disabled list was March 22 when he had a right-thumb contusion. Correia has ties to general manager Ned Colletti, the former Giants assistant GM, and medical director Stan Conte. "Its a division Im familiar with and theres a couple of familiar faces from when I was with the Giants: Ned Colletti and Stan Conte, the trainer," Correia said. "So its not going to be a completely foreign situation for me and I think thatll help." Twins manager Ron Gardenhire praised Correia for his work with the club over two seasons in spite of his struggles with a career-high losses this year. "Hes been nothing but a pleasure. Last year he was our best pitcher, most consistent pitcher," Gardenhire said. "This year I know he had some ups and downs but he always seemed to give us a chance. A great guy in the clubhouse. ... Its a good situation. Hes going to a team in the pennant race. He deserves it." Milone went 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA over 11 starts with the As when he was sent down July 5 following the trade for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs. The 27-year-old Milone made one start at Triple-A on Aug. 5, allowing one run on six hits in seven innings. "We are really excited to get him. We didnt want to give up Sammy Fuld," Gardenhire said. "We got a nice pitcher out of the deal, a guy that knows how to pitch in the big leagues, good track record. Were going to get him up here. ... Weve made a spot now, and hes going to get the ball." MIAMI -- New Miami Dolphins offensive co-ordinator Bill Lazor says he can help head coach Joe Philbin win games and some job security. Lazor said he accepted the job Wednesday because of Philbin, even though his new boss status is shaky after two so-so seasons. "Right now my future and his future are together," Lazor said. "Im in it with him. I choose to compete and make an impact and to be a difference-maker, and thats why Im here." Lazor was hired Wednesday by Philbin after one season as quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he helped develop second-year pro Nick Foles into the NFLs top-rated passer. The Dolphins also had a second-year quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. Foles threw 27 touchdown passes and two interceptions, while Tannehill threw 24 and 17. Lazor said he studied Tannehill on video before accepting the job. "Im really excited to work with him," Lazor said. "I see a lot of ability." The Dolphins ranked 27th in the NFL in yards, finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The Eagles ranked second in total yards and offensive points, went 10-6 and won the NFC East. "A lot of the things that led to that are going to have a great impact in what I believe works going forward," Lazor said. Lazor was offensive co-ordinator at the University of Virginia from 2010 to 2012, and he has also worked for the Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons. He replaces Mike Sherman, who was fired last week after two seasons with Miami and was Tannehills head coach at Texas A&M. The Dolphins are also searching for a general manager to replace Jeff Ireland, who departed last week after six seasons. On Wednesday they announced the completion of an interview with Brian Xanders, senior personnel executive with the Detroit Lions. Five candidates interviewed earlier. Considered along with Lazor for the offensive co-ordinator job were Greeen Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, who was hired Tuesday as offensive co-ordinator of the New York Giants, and former Washington Redskins offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan.dddddddddddd Lazor said he and Philbin hit it off during the interview process. They had known each other casually for years. "Bill is an accomplished coach and will be a great addition to our coaching staff," Philbin said in a statement. "Bill has been instrumental in helping players reach their full potential, as players and people, at both the college and professional level. He also has a proven track record of success working with a wide variety of offences." In addition to the Eagles Chip Kelly, Lazor has coached under Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmgren. "The No. 1 thing that was common was that they had a vision of how offensive football should look," Lazor said. "Every day we went out to practice, they made sure what they saw on the field was heading toward that vision. Its the job of the coaches to keep pushing in that direction." Lazor was noncommittal regarding other possible changes in Philbins offensive staff. "He and I have not had all of our conversations about the structure of the staff," Lazor said. "Thats something that will be handled going forward." Some sort of shakeup was inevitable after the Dolphins scored once in their final 24 possessions while losing their final two games to blow a potential playoff berth. Miami allowed a franchise-record 58 sacks, and off-season upgrades will focus on an offensive line depleted by the teams midseason bullying scandal. The Dolphins might be in the market for a running back, too. Lamar Miller scored two touchdowns, the lowest total for a player leading the Dolphins in rushing since 1980. Miami threw the ball 65 per cent of the time, third-highest in the NFL. The Eagles threw it 53 per cent of the time, sixth-lowest. Tyson Barrie scored in the final minute of regulation, and then scored again in the shootout, leading Colorado to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night. In his first CFL Draft at the helm of his own football team, Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager Kyle Walters solidified his offensive line, pulled the trigger on a trade to move back into the second round, and found some value with his late picks. And while taking highly-touted Simon Fraser offensive lineman Matthias Goossen second overall on Tuesday night will definitely help in an area of need for the club, it was a swap of draft picks that may prove to be his most shrewd move. "When Jesse Briggs started to fall a little bit, you could just see Kyle perk up in his chair. ‘We might have a chance here," said head coach Mike OShea of the Blue Bombers war room on Tuesday night. "And then (hes) working the phone and pulls the trigger and we move up to get a guy that we really value. I think that was a great move. It was fun to be sitting right there watching him work." Winnipeg entered the draft with no picks in the second round, having sent their original along with Alex Hall late last season to Saskatchewan to acquire offensive tackle Patrick Neufeld — a 25-year-old Canadian they hope to be a ratio-breaking starter on the offensive line. The Bombers called up a familiar trade partner Tuesday, Roughriders GM Brendan Taman, and exchanged their two third-round picks (20th and 26th overall) for Saskatchewans second-rounder, taking Briggs 17th overall to add some depth to the linebacker corps. "Jesse Briggs was a guy that we rated high. We were looking for some depth at linebacker. A special teams player. A phenomenal athlete," said Walters of the 6-foot-1, 222-pound McGill product. "And when we had an opportunity — youre in constant talk with all the other teams — if Briggs is here at this number heres what well do. And talking to a bunch of teams. And we were able to get him where we wanted to so we jumped at it." "Briggs, we expect to push. Losing James Green, Pierre Labbe, we needed that role as a special teams guy," added Walters. "Hes going to come in and be given every opportunity to compete and win that role as he pushes." "He played the SAM linebacker position in college so he is comfortable in space, but we view him in our system as a linebacker. An in-the-box guy thats going to be turned loose and run around." But the biggest acquisition made Tuesday is the man who the club hopes will soon start at centre. The 6-foot-4, 294-pound Goossen was one of two O-linemen who came to Winnipeg in the past month for private workouts and interviews. The othher was Lavals Pierre Lavertu who went first-overall to Calgary.dddddddddddd "I was really impressed by the way that the coaches came across, hearing about how things have changed there," said Goossen in his post-draft conference call. "Its really good to see the changes and I know that itll be a great year this upcoming year." Over the winter, Walters mentioned on a few occasions that the team needed and would land a starter with the No. 2 pick, but Tuesday the GM curtailed those statements slightly when speaking specifically of the 21-year-old lineman. "Im not going to put any undue pressure on him. Hes expecting himself to come in and start," said Walters. "Lets let him get to Winnipeg and lets let him get his feet under (him) before we start putting undue pressure on him." "Given his age, I mean he is a man," said OShea of Goossen. "You see how hes built. His film says that hes got a real good chance at (starting), but being as young as he is I just feel theres a little bit of a difference here. We dont want to stick him in and ruin him, sort of get him shell-shocked and ruin his confidence. "If camp shows us, and he shows us in camp what he believes hes going to show us and what we think he can do, and thats the logical step for us, then hell be in there. And if he needs a bit of time then were quite willing to give him that — afford him that time to develop a little bit. But hes going to be a good player for a long time in this league and its up to me now and the offensive line coach to make sure we dont put him in a position thats going to hurt his confidence." "Im just going to go to camp and try to work as hard as possible and just try to get better every day," added Goossen when asked about potentially starting in his rookie year. "If the coaches want to put me as a starter then that would be great, but right now Im just trying to get into camp and contribute to the team." Winnipeg added another Simon Fraser product in the fourth round in 6-foot-1 defensive back Derek Jones. Jones comes from some impressive bloodlines, as his father Ed won five Grey Cups with the Edmonton Eskimos in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Another intriguing prospect was taken in the sixth round with 305-pound defensive lineman Quinn Everett out of Mount Allison, who Walters says will be expected to learn the nose tackle position as well as along the O-line. The club drafted McMaster linebacker Aram Eisho with their final selection in the seventh round. With the San Jose Sharks in the midst of their first round playoff series with the St. Louis Blues in April, forward Dominic Moore left the team to attend to a family matter. On Tuesday, Moore released a statement through the team to explain the reason for his absence. "There have been a lot of questions and concerns raised since it was revealed that I had to miss several games of the Sharks/Blues playoff series due to a family matter and I wanted to update extended family, friends, and former teammates on our situation. Towards the end of the 2011-12 season, my wife, Katie, began feeling ill. We visited with local doctors, who suggested running a variety of tests to ascertain the cause of the issue. Ultimately, Katie was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer and it was recommended that she undergo surgery, which took place in California in April. While it was disappointing to not be able to compete with my Sharks teammates in the playoffs, my wifes condition and care come first and I want to thank the Sharks organization, my teammates and their families for the love and support that has been shown to Katie and I during this difficult time. PHOENIX - After a two-week absence, LeBron James was back in the Cleveland lineup when the Cavaliers met the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. The four-time MVP had taken time off to rest his sore left knee and lower back.Obviously were happy to have him back, Cavaliers coach David Blatt said before the game. Hes a very big part of our team, a dominant player in the NBA. I would just caution to be fair with him, he hasnt played competitive basketball for eight games, and thats not a normal thing for LeBron.Cleveland went 1-7 in James absence and had lost five in a row going into the game against the Suns. The Cavaliers fell to 19-19 and are sixth in the Eastern Conference.James practiced with the team on Monday, then made a quick trip to Texas to cheer on Ohio State in the college football national championship game. He said he got back to Phoenix at 12:30 a.m.Monday was the first time he had practiced since his layoff. At the morning shootaround, James said he felt a little sore, a little tight, which I figured.I havent done no basketball as far as live drills in two weeks, he said, so my bodys a little sore but not hurting.James said that sitting and watching the Cavaliers struggle was the most difficult thing Ive gone through. The team was six games above .500 when he shut it down.Weve got to approach every game with a sense of urgency, James said. I hated the fact we were playing some pretty decent ball when I went out. We lost a lot of games while I was out.Blatt said he wanted to limit James Tuesday night in the low 30-minute range if that.Im sure like any other human being it will take him a little bit of time to find his normal rhythm, Blatt said, but I know hell go out there and give us everything hes got.Veteran forward Shawn Marion also returned for the Cavaliers after missing two games with a left hip strain. It was the first time that James played with recently acquired guard J.R. Smith and centre Timofey Mozgov. Were still kind of in a flux, Blatt said, but its a heck of a lot better having those guys (James and Marion) out there. Adidas Neo Trainers Womens . CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Reds went two weeks before breaking out of their hitting slump. Chris Heisey connected for his first grand slam and Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in a career high-tying four runs as Cincinnati took advantage of Tampa Bays depleted pitching staff for a 12-4 victory on Sunday. The Reds best offensive showing of the season featured Mesoracos three-run homer, Joey Vottos two-run shot and Heiseys pinch-hit slam in the eighth. Jay Bruce doubled, walked four times and scored four runs. The Reds had a brief meeting following a 1-0 loss on Saturday that epitomized their season-long struggle at the plate. "The key early in the season is to not lose faith," manager Bryan Price said. "We understand that were a good team, and everyone in there knows it." For the first time all season, they played like it. The Reds salvaged the final game of their interleague series but remained in last place in the NL Central at 4-8. The hitters have been the biggest problem, tied for last in the majors heading into the game. Zack Cozart got it going with a bases-loaded double off Cesar Ramos (0-1), making his first start of the season because of injuries. The Reds finished with a season high in runs -- they hadnt scored more than six in any previous game -- and hits with 13. "Its so early that you really cant say were not going to hit with runners in scoring position," Mesoraco said. "Weve just got to bear down and try not to do too much." Left-hander Tony Cingrani (1-1) gave up five hits in 6 1-3 innings. Ben Zobrist homered from both sides of the plate, hitting two-run shots off Cingrani and right-hander Nick Christiani. "It was great to see them come through and break out and get five runs (early)," Cingrani said. "It was just a matter of time. Weve got a great hitting lineup. Today was the day they broke out of it." The Rays are 3-3 on a trip that has been tough on their rotation. Matt Moore went on the disabled list with a sore elbow on Tuesday, and Alex Cobb joined him Sunday with a strained oblique. Also, reliever Joel Peralta was sick, leaving him unavailable. The injuries affected the final game of the series. Ramos, who had made four relief appearances this season, started in Moores place and helped the Reds offence get unstuck. "One of those days, man," manager Joe Maddon said. "You just file it and move on. This is less than the 30-minute rule. This is the 30-second rule. Just drop it and move on." Cincinnati came into the game tied with San Diego for fewest runs in the majors with 28. Ramos helped the Reds by walking the bases loaded in the second, and Cozart hit a ground-rule double for his third hit of the season and a 2-0 lead. Vottos second homer of the series sparked a 10-batter, five-run third inning. Ramos left after throwing 47 pitches. Brandon Gomes relieved and gave up Mesoracos homer. Mesoraco added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The catcher opened the season on the disabled list with a strained oblique. In four games the past week, he went 7 for 14 with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Heisey connected in the eighth off Josh Lueke for his seventh career pinch-hit homer. NOTES: The Rays open a three-game series in Baltimore on Monday, starting Chris Archer (1-0) against Wei-Yin Chen (1-1). ... The Reds continue their six-game homestand by hosting Pittsburgh. Homer Bailey (0-1), who has won his last five starts against the Pirates, goes against Wandy Rodriguez (0-2). ... Rays called up LH reliever Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham to fill Cobbs roster spot and sent him back after the game. LH Erik Bedard, who also was added to the roster on Sunday, will take Cobbs spot in the rotation for now. ... It was Zobrists fourth career multihomer game. ... Maddon batted Ramos eighth, figuring that hed have to pinch-hit for him early anyway. ... Reds starter Mat Latos was diagnosed with a sprained right forearm. He wont throw for 10 to 14 days. ... In the first period between Vancouver and Buffalo on Sunday, Buffalo iced the puck and suddenly Zenon Konopka needed a new stick.MINSK, Belarus - Canadian captain Kevin Bieksa paid the price in the form of a chipped tooth and stitches on the inside of his mouth. After Canada held on to beat the Czech Republic 4-3 on Monday at the world hockey championship, it was worth it. Bieksa took Jan Kovars stick to the mouth, a penalty that gave Canada a five-minute man advantage it scored twice on. When the Czechs scored twice in the third period to make things interesting, those power-play goals loomed large. "If you look at it, its the difference in the game," coach Dave Tippett said. Canadas power play was 1-for-11 in the tournament before Nathan MacKinnon and Morgan Rielly scored 17 seconds apart to build a three-goal lead. Even though Jiri Novotny and Tomas Hertl cut the advantage to one late, it was enough of a cushion to allow Canada to survive for a second straight victory. Still flush in his face from stopping 31 shots, goaltender James Reimer joked he and his teammates just wanted to keep it close and entertain the fans at Chizhovka-Arena. But he expected the Czechs to make a push. "Theyre a good team," Reimer said, pausing to catch his breath. "And obviously theyre playing desperate. ... You know they werent going to roll over, you knew they were going to come hard." That was thanks in part to what Tippett called "unforced errors" by his players. "Theyre going to get their pressure just because theyre good players, but then adding fuel to the fire, thats when youre really in trouble," Tippett said. "There was two or three times in that third period where we had a good chance to clear it, make a good, solid, simple play and we forced pucks that got turned over and then it comes right back at you." Even though it got nerve-wracking late, Canada had some breathing room. Goals by Joel Ward — his third of the tournament — and assistant captain Kyle Turris helped the Canadians rebound from giving up the first goal for a third straight game before the power play finally clicked. That wasnt just a coincidence. Tippett made some personnel switches on the power-play units, putting Alex Burrows, Ward and Turris on the ice to see what would change. "Less skill and more work," he said. Work behind the net put Bieksa in position to draw the game-altering slashing penalty 15:01 into the second period on Kovar, who got an automatic game misconduct.ddddddddddddCzech coach Vladimir Ruzicka was surprised it was called slashing and not high-sticking after checking it out on video. No matter the penalty, Bieksa required medical attention on the bench while the game was delayed as workers brushed his blood off the ice. The 32-year-old Vancouver Canucks defenceman remained in the contest, to the surprise of no one. "Give credit to him: Just spat out some blood and was ready to go on the next shift," winger Matt Read said. "Hes a warrior, hes our leader and its good to see that." Bieksa was unable to talk to reporters afterwards because he required stitches that made it difficult for him to speak. His teammates spoke for him, most notably on the five-minute major power play. "Thats a huge aspect of the game," Read said. "A guy sacrificing his body, unfortunately, but if you dont come out with at least one goal, you know youre on your heels and it gives them all the momentum." Instead, Canada had all of it until midway through the third when the Czech Republic turned up the heat. The pro-Czech crowd of 6,317 came to life, but two late penalties — to Jaromir Jagr and Jiri Hudler — ended the chances of a comeback. The win gave Canada seven points atop Group A. Its next game is Thursday against Denmark. Before then, Tippett hopes to work on some things and use the third period as a teaching tool. "Those are all good things — not good things for our team, but learning experiences for our team that we have to make sure we can get through situations like that," he said. Just minutes after holding on, Canadas players recognized the value of getting tested in a game they looked to have total control of. "Its something were going to learn from moving forward that you cant take it easy going into the third, no matter what kind of lead you have," Turris said. "Were gaining experience as we go." NOTES — Former Calgary Flames forward Roman Cervenka opened the scoring for the Czech Republic, cashing in on a two-on-one rush with Vladimir Sobotka. ... Canada chased Czech starter Jakub Kovar after Riellys goal, the fourth on 13 shots. Alexander Salak got a roughing penalty for punching Burrows just seconds after he entered the game, then stopped the seven shots he saw the rest of the way. DETROIT -- Gustav Nyquist made the most of his return from the minors. Niklas Kronwall was credited with the tie-breaking goal in the third period, Nyquist had 2 goals and the Detroit Red Wings broke a seven-game game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Nyquist was recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League earlier in the day. He wasnt there because he wasnt good enough to make the team out of training camp, but due to salary cap reasons. He was one of Detroits best forwards in training camp and during the exhibition season after playing a key role for the Red Wings on the third line during last seasons playoffs. Only a shoulder separation to defenceman Danny Dekeyser in Tuesday nights 2-0 loss to Nashville, which put him on the long-term injured list, gave Detroit the cap space to bring Nyquist back. "Well see, well see what happens here," Nyquist said after the game. "Obviously this is where I want to play and I want to be a part of this team and hopefully well be able to work that out." He scored his first goal just 17 seconds into the game by putting in a loose puck from the bottom of the right circle. "It was a lucky bounce there, but it for sure was nice to get a quick one so that felt great," Nyquist said. Henrik Zetterberg assisted on both Nyquists tallies and Darren Helm added a goal for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson made 24 saves. "We needed to win and it was a good win for us. I thought our team played well. We had lots of opportunities," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We made it closer than we needed to, for sure. I thought we really carried territorial play. Our specialty teams were outstanding." Andrej Sekera scored twice and Brett Bellemore got his first NHL goal for Carolina. Justin Peters stopped 43 shots. "Theyre a good hockey team and they played well. . They owned the puck," Sekera said. Kronwall was credited with the 5-on-3 power-play goal that broke a 2-2 tie 8:29 into the third period when Hurricanes captain Eric Staal accidentally kicked the puck into his own net. Nyquist scored on a breakaway with 4:02 left. Sekera got his second goal with a short-handed effort in the last minute. Detroit killed off a 1:36 two-man disadvantage late in the second period and early in the third. "We were right there in the third period. We had a 5-on-3 that we had the chance to go up," Sekera said. "We didnt score and they scored on theirs." Sekera tied the game at 2 with 7:09 left in the middle period with his first goal. He made a move past the Red Wings Todd Bertuzzi and then beat Gustavsson with a wrist shot from the slot off the rush. It was Sekeras third goal. Bellemore put Carolina on the board 5:49 into the middle period, making it 2-1 by completing a give-and-go with right wing Radek Dvorak and whipping a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle past Gustavsson. Helm gave Detroit a 2-0 lead 2:37 into the second period. He also beat Peters with a shot from the bottom of the right circle for his third goal. BERLIN -- Hoffenheim defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Sunday, handing the home side its eighth loss in nine games across all competitions, while Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Nuremberg 5-2 to ease its relegation fears. American defender Fabian Johnson crossed for Anthony Modeste to tuck the ball away in the 89th minute for Hoffenheim. The French striker pointed to the net in an apparent reference to the "ghost goal" scored by Stefan Kiessling in the sides last meeting, when the ball went through a hole in the sidenetting. Sead Salihovic put the visitors in front with a penalty in the 14th, after Roberto Hilbert handled in the area. Emir Spahic crossed for Kiessling to equalize with a header in the 39th, but there was an immediate brilliant response from Kevin Volland, who eluded Andres Guardado and lifted the ball over the Leverkusen keeper inside the far post. The home side equalized again through Simon Rolfes, set up by Lars Benders back-heel after Hoffenheim keeper Jens Grahl saved Guardados free kick. Modeste had the final say with his 10th goal of the season to increase the pressure on Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia. Frankfurt earlier handed Nuremberg its fourth straight loss to leave the home side mired in the relegation zone. The visitors scored in the 21st minute when Stefan Aigner blocked Emanuel Pogatetz attempted clearance and crossed for Tranquillo Barnetta to score. Nuremberg was dealt a further blow when deffender Ondrej Petrak suffered a suspected broken nose and concussion after receiving Joselus elbow to the face in a challenge.dddddddddddd Nuremberg captain Raphael Schaefer suggested Joselu should have been sent off. "Its quite clear. Everyone can see it," the goalkeeper said. "Red card and we would have conceded two goals less." Aigner unselfishly set up Joselu in the 49th, and Alexander Madlung thought hed decided the game with Frankfurts third four minutes after that. "There was only fear in the first half. We played like a relegated team," Nuremberg coach Gertjan Veerbek said. But Josip Drmic scored the goal of the afternoon in the 64th, controlling Jose Campanas cross with his first touch and then firing high to far corner with his next, and Campana reduced the deficit further four minutes later with a shot from distance. Nurembergs revival was ended when Javier Pinola was sent off for bringing down Joselu as the last defender in the 80th. The Spanish striker decided the game on a counterattack in the 88th and set up Vaclav Kadlec for the visitors fifth in injury time. "The way I see it, we were lucky a red card wasnt issued (for Joselu). It would have been very close for us then," Aigner said. The result lifted Frankfurt to 12th, six points clear of Nuremberg and Hamburg in the relegation zone. "I got a sprain from celebrating. Incredible," Frankfurt coach Armin Veh said.
